Picking the Right Alloy for Offshore Projects
Selecting the right alloy for offshore applications can feel like navigating a minefield. With corrosive saltwater, extreme temperatures and constant mechanical stress, the stakes are high - one specification mistake can lead to costly downtime or even structural failure.
At Offshore Stainless Supplies, our team brings over 200 years of combined experience to help engineers, fabricators, and project managers make the right alloy choice for the toughest environments.

North Sea Success: Super Duplex in Action
A recent North Sea project perfectly illustrates the importance of alloy selection. For critical fasteners on an offshore oil platform, we supplied UNS S32760 Super Duplex strain-hardened cold drawn bars. This environment leaves no room for error - every component must survive exposure to chlorides, high pressures and constant mechanical loads.
As the UK’s only NORSOK-approved D59 manufacturer, we were able to meet the demanding MDS D59/D59L Rev 3 specification, supporting the production of hex bolts, stud bolts and cap screws built to withstand some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
Our bars didn’t just meet the spec - they passed every rigorous test thrown at them, including tensile, Charpy impact, ultrasonic inspections and even pitting and crevice corrosion resistance. That’s why our Super Duplex fasteners were trusted for such a high-integrity offshore project.
Debunking Alloy Myths for Offshore Applications
Over the years, we’ve heard plenty of misconceptions about stainless steel in harsh environments:
“316 is enough for subsea; we don’t need Duplex grades.”
Wrong. In chloride-rich offshore environments, standard 316 fails long before Duplex or Super Duplex grades. Super Duplex alloys provide exceptional corrosion resistance and strength, giving your components the longevity and reliability required offshore.
“Strain-hardened bars don’t really add any benefit.”
Wrong again. Cold drawing (strain-hardening) boosts tensile strength, surface integrity and dimensional consistency, all of which are vital for fasteners exposed to repeated stress in offshore structures.
Choosing the right alloy and processing method can be the difference between costly downtime and smooth operations on the platform.
