Supporting the Northern Lights CCS Expansion with NORSOK Materials
The Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project is a cornerstone in Norway’s strategy to reduce industrial COâ‚‚ emissions. CCS is a technology that captures carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes and power generation, then transports and stores it safely underground in geological formations such as depleted oil and gas fields or deep saline aquifers. The goal is to cut greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change while allowing continued industrial activity.

Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies recently announced a NOK 7.5 billion investment to expand the project’s capacity from 1.5 million to 5 million tonnes of COâ‚‚ per year by 2028. This ambitious expansion highlights the need for high-integrity materials that can withstand the extreme conditions associated with subsea COâ‚‚ transport and storage.
